Center for Functional Anorectal Disorders
At our center, we use state-of-the-art equipment and our extensive expertise to assess colorectal and anal function—including the function and structure of the rectum and anus—from both a motor and sensory perspective, conduct examinations and make diagnoses, and select the most appropriate treatment options for the patient.
In addition to a comprehensive diagnostic system unique to a specialized hospital (i.e. the establishment of a simplified electromyography (EMG) method) we have assigned not only physicians but also specialized continence care nursing professionals known as “continence leaders.” Through a multidisciplinary team approach involving clinical laboratory technologists, physical therapists, pharmacists, registered dietitians, radiologic technologists, medical social workers, and clinical engineers, we provide lifestyle guidance and multidisciplinary treatment.
Moreover, our hospital treats constipation and fecal incontinence by incorporating the international perspective and we are therefore able to accommodate patients from overseas. To support foreign patients, we have Chinese and English interpreters as well as translation devices so that we can provide services in a variety of different languages.

・Constipation and Fecal Incontinence
Constipation is a common symptom caused by abnormalities in the functioning of the large intestine and anus and people often use laxatives to try and induce bowel movements to alleviate this condition. However, prolonged use of stimulant laxatives can cause intestinal spasms, which may further worsen the symptoms. Moreover, fecal incontinence is not only caused by weakened anal muscles, it tends to occur due to a combination of various factors. Therefore, we aim to improve symptoms through thorough examinations and treatments provided by specialists and a multidisciplinary team. Treatment includes elimination care (i.e. abdominal massage, guidance on improving bowel habits, and instruction on the proper posture for bowel movements), medication counseling, and dietary guidance.
・Specialized Examinations and Diagnoses
To accurately assess the condition, we first conduct a detailed medical interview to inquire about your symptoms and then perform physiological tests and imaging studies based on that information.
These examinations include physiological function tests (i.e. anal manometry and anal electromyography) to measure the strength of anal sphincter contractions as well as examinations to assess sensation in the rectum and anus. We perform more than 2,000 examinations annually.
